Questions to discuss before nikah

Use these prompts to understand one another over several respectful conversations, with appropriate wali and family involvement. They are general preparation, not a checklist that can guarantee a successful marriage.

By Sunnah Match · Editorial responsibility: Sunnah Match team. General discussion guidance, not a personal religious ruling or scholar-reviewed advice.

At a glance

Discuss real expectations and examples. Leave room to reflect, clarify differences and seek qualified advice before making a commitment.

Religious practice and learning

Ask what religious practice looks like in an ordinary week. How does each person approach prayer, learning and decisions where they need guidance? A shared description on a profile can hide different expectations.

If a disagreement concerns a religious ruling, identify the question clearly and consult someone qualified. Do not turn a platform preference or this guide into a ruling.

  • What would you like religious learning to look like in your home?
  • Which expectations are essential to you, and which are preferences?
  • How would you handle a difference respectfully?

Family, home and location

Discuss where you expect to live, responsibilities to parents or dependants, and how both families will be involved. For a UK search, explain realistic travel and relocation constraints rather than only naming a preferred city.

  • Would either person need to relocate or change work arrangements?
  • What are your expectations about living with family?
  • How will you make time for both families and for your marriage?

Money, work and daily responsibilities

Talk about expectations for work, household spending, existing responsibilities and decision-making. Start with the information needed to assess compatibility; do not exchange bank credentials or private financial documents through an introduction.

Specific legal or financial arrangements need appropriate professional advice. A conversation guide cannot establish either person’s rights or obligations.

  • How do you approach budgeting and significant purchases?
  • What work or study plans need to be understood?
  • How do you expect household responsibilities to be discussed?

Children, communication and next steps

Discuss whether you want children, your expectations about parenting and any existing family responsibilities. Notice whether each person can listen, ask questions and disagree without pressure.

After a conversation, record what you understand and what still needs clarification. Agree a realistic next step with appropriate family involvement. It is reasonable to conclude respectfully that the match is not suitable.

  • How do you respond when you feel frustrated?
  • Who would you turn to for help with a serious disagreement?
  • What needs to be clarified before either family considers moving forward?

Common questions

Must we ask every question at once?
No. Use the prompts across several conversations. Prioritise what affects your decision and give each person time to think.
Is this religious advice?
These are general discussion prompts, not personal religious rulings. Consult a qualified adviser about your circumstances.
